CMS Superintendent Earnest Winston and his wife, Denise, sort of stumbled on Charlotte in the early 2000s when they read about the city in a magazine.
On their honeymoon with a layover at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, they saw the article and thought they’d check out more on the city.
Later, they saw an article in Black Enterprise magazine that said Charlotte rated high nationally as a good place to raise a family. Other research impressed the couple as well. They decided to give the city a try and haven’t looked back.
“We didn’t know a soul here,” Winston told the Hot Topic crowd. “It’s been one of the best decisions we have made in our lives.”
Today, they live in Matthews and have two daughters in CMS. “While being a superintendent is challenging, it does not compare to being a parent,” Winston noted. “That is my most important job.”
